  9.        BACKGROUND
  10.        
  11.        If you use QEMM 7.0 to load STACKER high while SMARTDRV.EXE 4.0
  12.        (from Windows 3.1) is running, the system will not be able to
  13.        access the Stacker drive. You may see a message like:
  14.        
  15.             Invalid unit reading drive {drive}
  16.        where {drive} indicates the Stacker drive.
  17.        
  18.        According to Quarterdeck Office Systems (QEMM 7.0), this problem
  19.        arises only when SMARTDRV.EXE from WINDOWS 3.1 is in memory.
  20.        SMARTDRV is unable to locate STACKER's "footprint" in memory, so
  21.        it ignores STACKER's drives. Use the procedure below to force the
  22.        "footprint" to be left behind for SMARTDRV to locate.
  23.        
  24.        PROCEDURE
  25.        
  26.        To let SMARTDRV recognize your Stacker drives, add the QEMM
  27.        undocumented "/STUB" switch to the STACKER.COM line in the
  28.        CONFIG.SYS file. Use the following procedure:
  29.        
  30.         1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file to modify to QEMM device driver
  31.             line. Type:
  32.                ED C:\CONFIG.SYS <Enter>
  33.         2. Locate a line that looks something like this:
  34.             DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 C:\STACKER\STACKER
  35.                C:\STACVOL.DSK
  36.         3. Use the arrow keys to position the cursor, then modify the
  37.             line to look like this:
  38.         DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /STUB /R:1 C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM
  39.             C:\STACVOL.DSK
  40.         4. Save the CONFIG.SYS file and exit to DOS.
  41.         5. Restart your computer.

  44.                  QEMM has a maintenance release (7.01) that
  45.                  solves this problem. Contact Quarterdeck for
  46.                  details.
